Dingwall Camera Club, based near Inverness, host one of the rounds of the British Photographic Exhibitions (BPE) circuit. I’ve been lucky enough to get the below shot of ‘Hope Valley Mists’ awarded a Certificate of Merit and a BPE Ribbon in their recent 2011 competition.
Dyxum Picture of the Week
I’d uploaded a selection of my Wiltshire/Dorset shots to the Sony/Minolta users forum – Dyxum.com and this shot of Gold Hill in Shaftesbury has been selected as their picture of the week. This is now my second after my previous shot of the F-16 jet also made it as POTW. To see the gallery go to Dyxum Gallery 233
Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire, September 2011
A couple of months back I had a few days exploring Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire. Locations visited included the Royal Crescent at Bath, Bath Abbey, Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Kingston Lacy, Kimmeridge Bay, Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, Stourhead (again!) and Lacock Abbey.
To see my resulting images go through to the gallery.
Stourhead Light & Land Workshop
A couple of weeks back I attended the Stourhead workshop run by Light & Land, lead by Charlie Waite and Antony Spencer. Antony won the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition last year and is now one of the leaders at Light & Land.
After a get to know you session and a welcome cup of tea we headed out into the grounds to search out some inspiration! It was slightly more challenging with the overcast weather but it was good to have a day just to concentrate on making images.
I’ve uploaded a few of my shots from the day in this gallery.
London Museums in Wide Angle
I recently captured a set of images of various London Museums using wide angle and fisheye lenses. The locations included the Natural History Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum. The fisheye lens in particular crams the detail in.

Dyxum Picture of the Week
Just seen that my shot of the Turkish Airforce F-16 jet has been selected as picture of the week on the Sony/Minolta users forum Dyxum.com. To see this weeks selection see Dxyum.com.
Royal International Air Tattoo
I attended the Royal International Air Tattoo on the 17th July, at RAF Fairford. The weather was forecast for cloudy skies and showers and it proved to pretty much well be the case. There was the odd moment of blue skies but in fact the threatening clouds made for a good backdrop to the smoke trails.
Kit used on the day was the Sony A700 with one of two Sony lenses. The Sony 500mm f/8 Reflex AF is a mirror lens which support autofocus operation, and provides a very lightweight (750mm effective) telephoto. It can be handheld and so is easy to pan with an aircraft, once you have found it through the viewfinder. This was the lens used for most of the close up single aircraft shots. For group formations then the Sony 70-300mm G SSM lens was the one to go for, allowing for a larger range of action to be captured.
I’ve created a gallery of my select shots from the day – RIAT 2011 Gallery
Sweet Rhythm Big Band
A few weeks ago I took some pictures of the Sweet Rhythm Big Band for one of my colleagues who is in the band and who wanted to update their website. I took a shot of the band using the curve of a staircase and shots of them at work in a gig. They are a bit different in that all their profits go towards charitable causes.
You can find their website at Sweet Rhythm Big Band
FIAP awards
Over the last few years I have been entering FIAP (International Federation of Photographic Art) accredited competitions. FIAP is the one of the overseeing groups for worldwide amateur photography.
Eventually once you have had enough images accepted in the required number of countries and different competitions then you can apply for the AFIAP award. As part of the process you have to provide a portfolio of your work that has been accepted in competition.
I’ve created a gallery to record my images which have been accepted in competitions – AFIAP Gallery
